The sad fact is that the average Janos and Maria – raised on a TV diet of dubbed films – are rather like Joe Bloggs of the UK; they barely speak a word of a foreign tongue. Why should they? After all, they are taught in school that their translator of Shakespeare actually produced a better version of Hamlet than the bard from Stratford – and many [mainly monoglots] believe it.
